Margaret “Maggie” Gee was one of only two Chinese women a part of the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, WASPS, during WWII. Her service helped break the prejudice and stereotypes surrounding Asian American women during the war.
Olivia J. Hooker was the first black woman to enlist in the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve SPARS, “Semper Paratus – Always Ready,” after the ban on black women joining was lifted. She was given the Coast Guard Good Conduct medal.
Colonel Ruth C. Streeter was the first Director of the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, WRS, and first woman to receive the rank of major in the Marine Corps. She was presented the Legion of Merit for her “outstanding service” during the war.
Charity Adams Early was the first African-American woman officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, WACS, and was commanding officer of the first battalion of African-American women serving overseas during WWII. She was the highest ranking African-American women in the army by the end of the war.
Grace Hopper was a computer pioneer and naval officer in United States Navy WAVES, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. Her contributions to computer science are extensive, and posthumously she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
Eleanor Roosevelt was serving First Lady during WWII and is known as one of the most politically active and influential First Ladies in history. She supported women entering the military and defended those who wanted to do more than type, file, and clean.
