The theme of my t-shirt revolved around two main ideas: that we were the last graduating class of only 90’s babies, and that we were uniquely close to our professors. Furthermore, I knew I wanted to commemorate our class in a design that captured personality, not just names. Ultimately my brainstorming led me to 90’s cartoons, and my illustration class gave me the idea to draw my professors as though they were characters in our favorite TV shows.
Once I had my top shows narrowed down, I paired my professors with cartoons I felt matched them best. As I illustrated, I regularly sought my classmates opinions to make sure my caricatures were accurate. Typically, the senior shirts are just for the students, but our year decided to surprise our professors with shirts as well.
The layout of my cartoon professors kept reminding me of the staff pages in my childhood yearbooks. Although limited space and time prevented me from giving everyone a portrait, a second distinct feature of yearbooks proved to be the ideal solution: signatures. In the same way grade-school kids sign their friend’s books at the end of the year, signatures proved to be the perfect, compact, personality filled way to say goodbye.
